Sulphur is a chemical element with the atomic number 16. It is found in varying amounts in crude oil where it is part of a wide range of molecules. When the sulphur containing molecules in petrol are burned in car engines the sulphur is converted into its oxides. These can poison the vehicles catalytic converter and contribute to “acid rain”.
