LyondellBasell advances clean burning fuels
European recertification as producer of sustainable biofuel ETBE

ROTTERDAM/FOS-SUR-MER, October 23, 2018 – LyondellBasell (NYSE: LYB), one of the world’s largest plastics, chemical and refining companies, recently certified for its biofuel ETBE (ethyl tert-butyl ether), produced at its European manufacturing sites of Fos-sur-Mer, France and Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The certification, given to LyondellBasell for the eighth time in a row, demonstrates that its ETBE meets European requirements for use as a biofuel to LyondellBasell’s customers. ETBE is commonly used as a clean-burning octane component in gasoline production.

Gasoline containing ETBE has over 65 percent lower greenhouse gas emissions than 100% fossil gasoline. This percentage covers the entire life cycle of ETBE, from ‘field to wheel’, meaning from raw material production to use in the vehicle.  Since 2011, all biofuels sold in the EU are required to have sustainability commitments and meet minimum 50 percent CO2 reductions, which must be properly certified. The International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) is one of the voluntary certification systems, approved by the European Commission. ISCC principles contribute with various Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations in 2015. Their renewed certification enables LyondellBasell to sell sustainable biofuels in all 28 Member States of the European Union.

“This certification confirms that LyondellBasell’s ETBE production chain fully fits into a sustainable development strategy”, LyondellBasell’s Vice President Fuels and Styrene Chain Willemien Terpstra explains.

LyondellBasell is the leading European and global producer of ETBE, a clean burning gasoline component with excellent blending characteristics. It combines high octane rate and low volatility, which improves overall air quality. It significantly improves the energy efficiency of fuels containing bio and reduces overall exhaust and tailpipe emissions.  It reduces atmospheric pollutants emissions and the formation of ozone, and can be easily transported via pipelines, vessels and trains. The use of ETBE helps EU member States to achieve their national and international objectives regarding the improvement of air quality. In France, all gasolines use ETBE: SP95, SP98 and SP95-E10.
