Sustainable Fuels, the voice of the fuel ethers industry in Europe, today launched its Vision for 2050 at an event hosted by Angelika Niebler MEP. The Vision outlines the role of liquid fuels in the transport system of tomorrow, delivering affordable and carbon-neutral mobility for all of Europe’s citizens while meeting Europe’s objective of climate neutrality by 2050.
As the European Commission prepares the Smart and Sustainable Mobility Strategy (SSMI), this Vision highlights the need for an ambitious push forward in the transport sector. The SSMI must recognise that liquid fuels, hydrogen and electrification will all play a role in a climate neutral economy. By utilising the expertise of Europe’s industrial sector, we can deliver new solutions rapidly while safeguarding the technical base needed to meet our 2050 ambition.
Between now and 2050, increasingly low carbon blends of fuels can reduce emissions of both GHGs and air pollutants quickly, in both new and existing vehicles. These will especially leverage the gains delivered by hybrid vehicles, utilise bio and waste feedstocks to deliver meaningful carbon savings.
By 2050, a combination of advanced biofuels, e-fuels and waste-based fuels will power mobility across Europe, complementing other technologies like electrification. For consumers, this will deliver performance, cost effectiveness and choice.
